Rebel Mess Dress

This Rebel Mess Dress is the first costume that I've ever made. I chose this because there wasn't much that I actually needed to do to it, which is a good thing as I've never down any sewing before (besides replacing shirt buttons!) This site has loads of reference pictures from the comics and information on how the site owner created her costume.

But more importantly, here's how I made mine...

Worked on the jacket. Collar and pockets needed to be removed and the sides of the jacket turned in to get the right shape. These were tacked in place.

Costume finished...

Rank Bar: Backing is the lid of a Margarine container cut to size (2"x3"). I covered it with a piece of gold sticker paper cut to the same size (purchased in the scrapbooking section of a department store $2). Lines for different sections were scored wtih a craft knife. The Rebel logo was printed from my computer on a mailing label, cut out and stuck to the bar. Rank pips were also printed onto a maling label but stuck to a left over piece of the lid before glue-gunned to the bar (to give depth). A safety pin was glue-gunned to the back.
Red Sash: 5" piece of red satin dewn into a tube to make the 2.25" sash. Sewn at the bottom of the front and back of the blazer and at the shoulder. Tacked near the rank bar to follow the shape of the blazer.
Grey belt: 4.5" piece of grey dupioni silk dewn to make the 2" belt. Sewn onto the inside jacket flap edge. Velcro closure on the side.
