UEY Western Nova Scotia

Social Risk Index

The Social Risk Index (SRI) is created using community-specific Census data. The SRI measures risk factors in a community using socio-economic variables such as levels of education, employment and household income.

The Social Risk Index for UEY Western Nova Scotia is comprised of the following 7 indicators:

  1. Portion of households below the provincial median income ( a median point is defined as the mid-point between the highest and lowest)
  2. Proportion of population 15 yrs and over who worked full-time, full year
  3. Proportion of individuals 15 years and over without a high school diploma
  4. Proportion of families with children headed by a lone parent
  5. Population mobility in and out of the community within a 12 month period
  6. Home ownership
  7. Proportion of the total household income coming from government transfer payments (i.e., CPP, Child Tax Benefit, provincial social assistance payments)

Each indicator is considered a risk factor for the early development of children if the community percentage is lower or higher, depending on the risk factor, than the Nova Scotia average.

The total number of risk factors in a community makes up its Social Risk Index.
